Bourdieu and Education: A Masterclass

During the summer of 2009 the BSA put out a call for organisers for postgraduate study days. We, the organisers , responded and were successful in securing the BSA funding on offer and in applying for matched funding from QUB. We each have an interest in the theoretical work of Bourdieu and in our respective fields of interest we each apply and develop his social theoretical insight. Nathan does so in the context of professional education focusing on undergraduate medical (ethics) education. Ciaran’s interest is in the area of non-vocational undergraduate degrees and post university career trajectories and employment. Nicola’s research is within the context of post-primary education. Her focus is on working class teenage boys’ sense of identity. As a result we have themed our study day proposal ‘Bourdieu and Education.’ On the 30th and 31st of March 2010 the Institute of Governance, the School of Law, QUB will be hosting a Bourdieu in Education masterclass. The two days will involve presentations by three internationally recognised academics and by UK and Ireland based postgraduate students. Each of the academics will host a two part masterclass for 1/3 of the participating students.

Further details of academic speakers, a provisional timetable and a call for postgraduate participants will follow.
